don't even get me started about how much it pisses me off when i see kratos interpretations that involve him being deliberately mean or - god fucking forbid - abusive to lloyd. except i'm already started. i'm going off. god.
like don't get me wrong, kratos is absolutely capable of drastically fucking up the process of raising a child but never would he hurt lloyd intentionally!! that's his son!!!! he doesn't WANT to hurt him!!!!
and some fucking asshole might be like "DERR, BUT RAR, YOU SAY THIS ABOUT THE GUY WHO'S A BOSS FIGHT LIKE THREE SEPARATE TIMES IN SYMPHONIA" and yes that is a thing but "we ended up on opposite sides of the war and we have to fight" is drastically different a scenario than kratos having full custody of lloyd, raising him from birth, and then for some fucking reason being abusive, WHICH HE WOULDN'T BE!!!!!!!!!!!! yes kratos' actions in symphonia are debatabely sound and he's definitely not dad of the year, but you cannot fairly extrapolate "kratos would be abusive" out of three boss fights that only happened becuase he was trying to keep up appearances for mithos. alright also the duel thing. the duel thing is bad. attempted suicide via hoping your son wil murder you is not. even. remotely good. but it's also still not abusive
and so "kratos is abusive" takes drive me FUCKING bonkers!!!!! becuase he woulnd't be!!!!!! the absolute most i could imagine is raine-style "whacking lloyd upside the head when he says something stupid" but even then that's not really kratos' style.... realistically he'd handle a situation like that with either a hissed under his breath "lloyd" or a pulling lloyd aside later to be like "hey, maybe don't say shit like that"
edit: also okay i know there isn't canon shit about kratos' own dad anywhere but we don't have to think too hard to extrapolate that kratos' dad Probably Wasn't The Greatest, so the most you'll probably get of kratos being abusive is him unthinkingly repeating something his dad did to him and then about a half second later realizing and backpedaling and drowning himself in self-loathing over the fact becuase hes' so fucking horrified that was a thing he just did
(this holds even if kratos' own dad wasn't abusive, tbh. the most you will ever get out of kratos is One abusive thing that he does without really thinking about it but then the moment he processes what just happened + lloyd's reaction he's so fucking horrified he wants to leave on derris kharlan.)
so!!! yeah!! god!!! kratos bieng abusive is so wildly incomprehensible to me!!!!! it's not something he'd do!!!!! he absolutely loathes every second he's fighting lloyd in symphonia itself and would never ever ever find any kind of joy or satisfaction or sense of righteousness in hurting hsi son!!!! i know for a fact he fucking hates himself for that bullshit!!!!!!! it might even be part of why he leaves the planet, becuase he thinks lloyd can't forgive him for it!!!!!!! HE HATES THE IDEA OF HURTING HIS SON AND WOULD NEVER UNLESS ABSOLUTELY FORCED TO
WHICH ALSO MEANS HE WOULDN'T BE MEAN TO LLOYD!!!! like okay i guess i can imagine "forcing emotional distance" and "playing up a cold persona so that lloyd doesn't get to know me well" because he wants to protect lloyd and knows (at least during the events of tos) that if lloyd gets close to him and learns the truth about, well, Everything, that's.... way more than he thinks lloyd should be involved in and so distance means safety which means he might avoid being Deliberately Soft with lloyd, but neither would he be deliberately mean?? or maybe i should say malicious?????????? god admittedly i don't feel as strongly about "kratos would Never say something mean to lloyd" but i do think he has very obvious limits and would never be malicious and definitely wouldn't insult lloyd, though he might harshly criticize like, lloyd's sword technique. (but it would only be sword technique. it would never be personality.)
and i also want to stress: kratos would only be mean for the sake of emotional distance within tos itself, which i know becuase the moment you take him out of tos and place him in another AU, the act immedaitely falls apart. you would have to construct circumstances identical to (or close to) tos' to make him pull that shit again. this is not a thing he wants to do, it's a thing he does out of necessity.
also also i want to say that every non-tos kratos muse i have ever had absolutely loathes tos kratos for how he hurt lloyd (actually, to be fair, tos kratos also loathes himself over this). i wrote a fucking 5k fic about this. the thought of hurting lloyd is so fucking foreign and undesirable to kratos that the moment he hears that another kratos has hurt lloyd he jsut goes "what. What. i would never??????? i would literally actually never?????? the Fuck"
