been thinking a lot about that "i'm writing fic" "no that's the genre what are you writing ABOUT" post and subsequently themes for my fics so here's all my major fics focusing on their themes / explaining them to someone w/ no familiarity with the fandom

24.8 / artificial aegis project / soup

It’s about surviving abuse long enough that you can escape it, with a side of murdering your abuser, and also the kind of friendships that are forged in surviving the same abuser when you can only trust each other and no one else.

B plot of four scientists being imprisoned and forced by the government to create artificial intelligence to be used as a superweapon and their struggles in realizing they are doing the wrong thing and trying to get away with doing the right thing even though they are under threat of death, ft the grief of losing a child and terrible coping skills, because who can possibly be prepared to cope healthily with sudden house arrest after your child was murdered.

 

YWKON

Vignettes about people caught in an oppressive system that is built inherently into the world’s magic system; surviving it, fighting back against it, freeing themselves from it. In the end culminates in the plot it was building up to: talking a well intentioned extremist down from uselessly destroying himself to undo the unjust system—and then bullying the answer for how to fix the system out of god.

With a side of focus on the love between siblings, the struggles of living after surviving trauma, learning that your worth is not determined by whether or not you are a successful super weapon for a country at war.

Crossover series that’s set out to explore how characters from different worlds play off each other when forced to work together towards a common goal. Comparing and contrasting similar characters, watching their needs merge and clash. With a dash of exploring healthy coping mechanisms post trauma, being realistic about boundaries, and reuniting with long lost loved ones when you didn’t have the chance to through normal means, and getting to say to them things that you didn’t get to say before.

 

FtPverse

An abuse survivor learns that what he went through was deeply fucked up, that he deserves better, and also that he inherently deserves love and has worth on the sole basis that he is a Living Being. Or as the tagline says: its about living, choosing to live, even when living seems like it’s the hardest thing anyone’s asked of you. It’s about learning the purpose you were created for doesn’t define you. It’s about learning that the only thing that defines you is you and your own choices.

It’s also about a war, though it’s less about the war itself and more about living in the war, the quiet nights and moments in between battles, and its’ about living after the war, coming to terms with the scars in your soul and carving out the rest you need, finding what normal looks like for you when the war is over.

With A Side Of Learning To Be Comfortable In Your Own Skin Again After Being Brainwashed And Nearly Killing Your Best Friend, Whoops. (This is almost definitely not about the character you think it is unless we’ve spoken about this before!)

About two souls bound across lifetimes because the god who created the world loved his wife so much he accidentally cursed the world to reincarnate her forever. About all the different ways they can meet in, or not meet in. It’s about yearning for someone you go four hundred years without seeing even though you don’t know their name. It’s about the grief you carry from lifetimes you can’t remember.

And most of all, it’s about trust earned and trust freely given because a relationship is as much about putting in the time to make your partner feel safe and respected around you as it is the falling in love part.

who could take bro strider in a fight? a study. for reasons.

note: bro strider is deadass one of the strongest characters in homestuck canon, skilled swordsman, can move faster than you can see, only finally died because the thrice-prototyped jack noir (who was on equal grounds as him) suddenly got a powerup that gave him complete control over space and teleportation and such. bro also chopped a fucking meteor in half. like. he's Tough Shit.

so: who in dywc could take him in a fight and win?

ground rules: all aegises can beat him, fullstop. that's just the rule of being an aegis. bro's just a really good, really brutal swordsman. he might put up one hell of a fight but he cannot dodge siren shots forever. also ether artes/magic definitely give the aegises a leg up over him. so. yeah.

note: mostly judging a 1v1 basis. barring the Literal Children (yes including the ftpcast), i think if any two paired up against bro it'd immediately swing the odds drastically against him.

team m

dave - obviously could survive a fight with bro, and now that he's 19 and has control over time, could probably win (provided he didn't freeze up because >thanks trauma). it'd be close, though. doable but =/= dave wiping the floor with bro.

ftp riku - would get his ass kicked. hard. riku may be the strongest character in ftpverse minus aqua, but he 1) got nerfed in ATR 2) isn't as hot shit as he thinks he is and would bite off more than he could chew. also he's strong but brute force =/= nuanced experience, which is where bro wins out. so, yeah, riku would lose.

((sidenote: she isn't in dywc but aqua would win a fight against bro. sure, he can dodge magic, but not forever. and since aqua's baseline is "fighting endless hordes of heartless", bro would be a frustrating change of pace, but she'd inevitably wipe the floor with him, no question))

ywkon kratos - could probably win, but it would be close, and kratos wouldn't come out uninjured. ether artes give him something of an upperhand, but kratos' solo ether output isn't fantastic. doable but wouldnt' be pretty.

shadow - difficult to call. shadow's at a weird disadvantage because >no weapon, but his reflexes are good and he can harness literally chaos itself. i think winning would require removing his limiters.

mythra - i said aegises would just win fullstop but i still felt bad about leaving them out. still tho. aegis. ether artes upperhand. siren. foresight. mythra'd win.


team m2

ywkon anna - would survive a while, even unarmed, but probably wouldn't win unless she managed to steal his sword and killed him before he stole it back. would survive significantly longer with her knife. capable of winning but it would be close and brutal, she would not come out uninjured. if she were driving malos her odds swing immediately towards winning, but mostly because she can't wield malos' sword unless he's close to her so then it becomse 1v2 and then it's just simple math. bro vs two opponents equally matched to him means he's at a disadvantage.

ywkon mithos - could probably win because >aegis, even if he's away from home terf. bro'd probably land a few hits but mithos would still win.

(tos mithos, for the record - would win, no question.)

chara - do not make the child fight the abusive asshole. chara could probably win but only if they could savescum through it / were able to end it in one blow. so uh. they could kill bro for sure but aren't capable of surviving a battle with him. two totally different metrics.

malos - aegis, would win, though he'd have a slightly harder time than mythra becuase no foresight. then again he also technically has a siren of his own?? and a fuckton of gargoyles?? but i mean i guess that's sliding out of 1v1 range. whatever. malos would win though bro would put up one HELL of a fight.


team a

jade curtiss - i have to say he'd win or it's a disservice to how OP he's played as narratively in abyss, but my counterpoint is if he's going to stand there for twenty minutes to cast, he's going to get fucking killed. depends on how literal you take casting times. team literally anyone up with jade, though (even someone unlikely to win alone, like riku or sora) and bro is dead meat

edit: my friend nael gave me more nuanced jade thoughts; the short version is just "jade would win it would just be slow. bro has him beat in speed but they're evenly matched otherwise and jade would eventually outhink him"

(ywkon jade, though he's not here - would simply freeze bro's blood solid and problem solved :) )

sophie - could probably win becuase her power levels are off the charts. it wouldn't be an easy fight but the chances of her winning are good. i know i said with riku that brute force =/= nuanced experienced but riku's brute force does not even hold a candle to sophie's and she has significantly more incredible battle knowledge programmed into her than riku ever had. (also, again, riku got nerfed)

silver - i don't think he'd win but him "IT'S NO USE"ing bro ad infinitum is a good mental image. asshole can't hurt you if you're holding him frozen with your telekinesis. only problem is silver has no way of hurting bro becuase yeeting him at high speeds so he collides with something is ineffective. so like, silver wouldn't win but he could stalemate them long enough for backup to arrive.

ywkon colette - >aegis, so she could probably win.

(tos colette, for the record: would lose if she 1v1'd him)

ftp sora - would lose. he's barely a competent swordsman and nowhere near keyblade master. has an advantage of magic but doesn't know enough magic / have enough practice to run circles around anyone with his magic+keyblade combos like, say, aqua would.

ftp namine - would lose. she only really knows magic (in her defense she has severe trauma re: holding a weapon) and prefers support spells.

pyra - well i said all aegises would win and i'm not going back on that but seeing as she's so nerfed she'd have a hard time of it. probably ywkon mithos and colette levels of a fight. bro would definitely land a handful of good hits but would ultimately lose.


team f

jade harley - well. unfortunately even with Gun i'm pretty sure bro can dodge bullets, so she'd have to fire a gun and then warp space so the bullet goes where he can't dodge. would probably be okay since she can teleport away from his blows ad infinitum. she's an unorthodox application of "green sun powers = beating bro" but i still think the theory holds water. so i guess would win but not tos kratos or kh aqua levels of wiping the floor with bro, if that makes sense.

tos kratos - would win. 4000 years of experience with sword and magic. like aqua kingdomhearts, he'd barely even feel it

soma cruz - without any of his soul eating powers he's fucked. give him a million demon soul power ups though and he stands a fairly good chance.

(also, i'd love to see julius belmont and bro go at it. difficult to say who'd win, though. julius might be at a disadvantage. can you bring a whip to a swordfight and win? can you win when the asshole you're fighting has lightning quick speed and can all but teleport?)

solid snake - i feel really bad about putting unarmed anyone up against bro lmao. i think snake could win but it would require some ingenuity and probably shooting bro with a gun at point blank. possible, wouldn't be pretty.

shulk - he's delicate!!!!! even with the monado at full power i don't think shulk could 1v1 bro and win, shulk's not that good at fighting. "even with his visions??" FAIR POINT but i still think, even with visions, shulk wouldn't win a 1v1 against bro

(could zanza win???? .....i think if any Literally Just A Dude character could beat zanza, it'd be bro, unfortunately, but it's not clear cut and i could see it swinging either way. zanza is A God. he can win. but bro could also win. it's a fair fight)

alvis - "aegis" so he'd win but i've never thought about alvis using the full of his power in the context of a fight LMFAO...... he doesn't like fighting is the thign but that's besides the point. i'll just leave it at aegis so he wins. also i don't. know if it's possible. for alvis to die. like i'm pretty sure he's textbook immortal. so even if alvis doesn't like, hit that hard, bro could never beat alvis, which is the same thing as alvis being able to beat bro, i guess. sure.


team starlight

fiora - probably not if she's homs (though she stands a better chance than shulk lmao). if she's in her mechon body i don't think that thing can feel sword hits, realistically, idc what gameplay says. might not win but her chances go up significantly. update: having seen her dps nonsense in action i definitely think it's a fair fight LMAOOOO. swings towards "might not be pretty, but doable af" like the ywkon cast

(meyneth? same rules as zanza. could probably beat bro, but i can see that fight swinging either way.)

tos martel - doesn't have 4000 years of experience and is a fleshy mage. winning possible but highly unlikely if she's solo.

(tos yuan so it's on the table: would win, for the same reasons tos kratos and mithos would win aka the magic and the 4000 years of experience and all three probably fall on the same exact caliber of bro's ruthlessness if they need to. if martel also had those 4000 years of experience she would win no questions asked)

(the rest of the tos cast/party would not be able to 1v1 bro and win, though)

ftp kairi - would lose. the ftpcast is just. highly inexperienced children. like she knows combat, but like sora has only been doing the fighting thing for like two years. that's not enough experience.

ftp kano - same song and dance. doesn't have nearly enough experience. would lose.

ftp joseph - would lose, for same reasons as the rest of the ftpcast, with bonus "is three years younger than the rest of them and has Absolutely No experience with a Serious 1v1 fight" (everyone else in the ftpast has had at least One serious 1v1 fight with someone)

((so it's on the table: ftp aerith and leon could not 1v1 solo bro and win, but teamed up i think they could win, though it'd be close. rinoa - ftpverse and in general - could probably 1v1 and win but runs into that "fleshy mage with casting times" problem so it'd be better if she was paired with someone))

rosalina - ????????????? i don't know but i think her being a space goddess gives her a huge upperhand. i don't know how she does a violence, though??? i'll leave it at would survive an altercation with bro wouldn't necessarily win. she could probably jsut throw him into any sun of her choosing though and problem solved,,,,


misc teamup notes

shulk and fiora together could win

any pair of the ftpcast would still lose

all of the ftpcast together could possibly win, provided bro didn't fight dirty (lmao)

riku and shulk are both ones that wouldn't be able to 1v1 bro solo and win but pair them with someone competent and suddenly their odds are much better than [gestures at chara and the rest of the ftpcast]

riku and shadow together might be able to do it

riku and shulk together with no one else have good odds but it isn't a set thing

jade curtiss could, again, be paired with literally anyone and then win. him and silver is a fun combo to consider.

correction: i think joseph and chara and namine are the exepction to this rule. joseph and chara are twelve and at an extreme disadvantage, and so is namine since she doesn't know how to fight and her support buffs don't do much re: distracting bro so jade curtiss can cast. joseph - known for being a very good distraction - might be able to distract bro long enough for jade to cast but would get hurt badly if he had to do it for more than a few spells

jade curtiss and martel would be able to pull it off, though slightly more unorthodox since they're both mages. depends on where you can afford jade doing melee (and, again, how long casting times actually are bc in video games they're abstracted to force limitations on the player / make boss fights a little easier). all this to say i don't quite know what it would look like but i think they could do it.

(any other pair with jade curtiss is mostly of the flavor of the not-jade character 1v1s bro to distract him while jade casts)

jade and jade could pull it off, honestly, i just want to throw it out that jade harley would be less 1v1ing and more "teleporting herself and bro as necessary to keep him distacted and away from jade curtiss, as he casts"
